Our production is focused on the development of a quality, hardy field liner. This starts with our healthy parent plants, which we take cuttings from.
These winter cuttings are rooted in our greenhouse in 4-6 weeks with bottom heat.
In the spring, they are transplanted into raised beds on 6-8″ centers. These raised beds are shaded during the summer and are covered in plastic to protect them the first winter.
After 2 growing seasons in raised beds they are transplanted again into fields where they will grow until harvested for sale.
We line out over 2000 holly per year and currently have over 20,000 in our fields.
We do not use pots in our production because we feel transplanting develops stronger, more fibrous root systems and eliminates spiraling roots which may girdle the trunk (sometimes many years after the plant has been sold).
6 foot and 7 foot finished holly are what our customers request most often. These are harvested with truncated “Caretree” tree spades and shipped in 24 or 28″ wire baskets.
Optimum transplanting time is late summer or early fall, after new growth has hardened.
